Scholars from Caribbean universities and joined UM and FIU Caribbean-focused faculty for a one-day planning meeting entitled “Hemispheric Caribbean Studies: Collaborative Research and Teaching Proposals,” on Friday October 20, 2017 at the University of Miami. The day featured a morning session focused on the research profiles and initiatives of each institution in Caribbean Studies, and an afternoon session centered on small group discussions to explore possibilities of collaboration in research and teaching.
This event was organized by the Martha Weeks Chair in Latin American Studies, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and Hemispheric Caribbean Studies of UMIA. Initiated by Yolanda Martínez-San Miguel (Modern Languages and Literatures), the organizing committee also included Donette Francis (English), Lillian Manzor (MLL), and Kate Ramsey (History). Faculty participants from Caribbean-based institutions included Kenneth Connell and Yanique Hume, the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill, Barbados; Camila Valdés León, Casa de las Américas, Havana, Cuba; Nadève Ménard, the Université d’État d’Haïti, Port-au-Prince; Matthew J. Smith, the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica; Luis E. Agrait Betancourt and María Elena Rodríguez-Castro, the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras; and Patricia Mohammed, the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago.
Faculty participants from Florida International University included Miguel Asencio, Danielle Clealand, Jorge Duany, Andrea Queeley, Chantalle Verna, and Liesl Picard. Ana Dopico from New York University also joined the discussion. Hosted by the Cuban Heritage Collection, Richter Library, the planning meeting was co-sponsored by the American Studies Program, the Center for Hispanic and Caribbean Legal Studies, the Center for the Humanities, the Departments of English, History, and Philosophy, the University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas, and the Latin American Studies Program.
