Established in 2015, the University of Miami Institute for Advanced Study of the Americas brings together relevant scholarship, furthers policy dialogue, and builds strategic knowledge partnerships to address challenges faced by the Americas in the 21st century.

Building on the foundational work, trajectory, and interests of the Center for Hemispheric Policy and the Center for Latin American Studies over the last decade, the institute promotes human, economic, and social development across Latin America and the Caribbean through research, teaching, convening, disseminating, and incubating innovative projects. Its mission is to create and share knowledge bridging the Americas, strengthening all areas of the University of Miami engaged in research relevant to the hemisphere.

Vision: UMIA is one of the leading centers of scholarship and research on the Americas. It is an interfaculty, interdisciplinary Institute promoting enhanced understanding of sustainable human, economic and social development within and across the Hemisphere through scholarship and research, teaching, convening, communicating and incubating innovative projects.

Mission: To build a thriving Institute that creates and shares knowledge bridging the Americas, strengthening and catalyzing UM’s transformation into a Hemispheric University.
