Professor and Associate Dean Planning and Strategic Initiatives

An interdisciplinary engagement of borders and migrations, steeped in history. Encompassing the proposed border wall, the three Trump travel bans, and refugee restrictions, Prof. Bender focused on Latin America and the U.S.-Mexico border, while instructing on histories and identifying myths from the contentious and longstanding debates over culture, security, and material prosperity.

Ultimately, borders are artificial and often the product and sites of war, conquest, struggle, purchase, and continued contestation. Despite their artificiality, they pose real consequences for many migrants who carry our hyper-securitized border with them on their journeys toward the American Dream.
