In 2013 the highest court in the Dominican Republic ruled to retroactively strip citizensip from those born to Haitian parents after 1929, effectively rendering hundreds of thousands of Haitian-Dominicans stateless. This talk explored the interconnected histories of Haitian-Dominicans communities, the sugar industry, and anti-Haitian racism, and in so doing explained the historical roots of the contemporary Statelessness crisis in the Dominican Republic.
